Hair Extensions Cost–Everything You Need To Know

by Serena Martin on October 21, 2011

Hair extensions cost can vary greatly starting at a couple hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. The costs depend on many factors such as the length of hair you want, and the method used to apply the hair extensions. Another factor that influences the price is the time it takes to apply the hair extension. If it is a more time intensive method, then usually you can expect to pay a lot more.

The type and quality of the hair extension also greatly affects the overall cost. At the top end is of the price range is 100% human hair that has not been chemically treated, also known as virgin human hair. Prices for this human hair range from $80-$500.  With this option, while it is more expensive, you do get your money’s worth. This is because it looks the most natural and lasts the longest.

An affordable alternative to human hair is synthetic, or fake hair.  Prices for this option range from $50-$100. A great benefit of synthetic hair is that since the style has already been pre-set, factors such as rain and humidity will not affect it.  While synthetic hair is cheaper ,the drawbacks to using synthetic hair lie in the fact that it cannot be color or  heat treated,  meaning that you cannot blow dry, flat iron, curl, or color it. It also cannot be reused like human hair, so it may actually cost you more in the long run.

Something else to consider is how much hair extensions you will need. Obviously you will pay a lot more if you want a full head of extensions compared to a few strands.

Whatever reason you choose to get hair extensions, whether it is for a wedding, prom, or just to try something different, there is an option for you. Below, I will break down the different options and methods you can choose and the price ranges of each.

Weave

One of the most popular methods for attaching hair extensions is with a weave. Weaving is when the hair extensions are actually braided, or woven into your own hair. This is a great method if you only want to fill out thinner sections of your hair. The costs for this option range from $1000 to $2000.

Coil Hair Extensions

Another method for applying hair extensions involves string your hair through tiny copper coils.  The extensions are then inserted, and the coil is clamped down with a tool holding your natural hair and the hair extensions in place.  This method does not use any chemicals and does not put as much tension on your hair as some of the other methods listed would.   Prices for this method range from $750 to a few thousand dollars.

Hot Fusion Bonding

Another option is Hot Fusion Bonding. Starting at around $350 to $500 or more, this method is also one of the most economical. With Hot Fusion Bonding, the hair extensions are attached to your own hair using hot glue.

Cold Fusion Bonding

What is Cold Fusion Bonding? This method uses a keratin-based polymer to attach the extension to your hair. Cold Fusion Bonding is a bit more gentle on your hair than Hot Fusion Bonding. Another great benefit of this application method is that it lasts longer–sometimes up to 6 months. With these benefits, also comes a steeper price. Cold Fusion Bonding is a lot more expensive than Hot Fusion Bonding, with the hair extensions cost ranging from $1,000 to $3000.

Other Hair Extensions Cost: Maintenance

One other important thing to think about with hair extensions cost is the maintenance of your extensions. You may have to visit a salon every month for the upkeep of your extensions. This can cost you anywhere from $50 to $150 each visit.

These prices in general are what you would expect to pay at your average salons. However, for some of
the higher end salons (you know, those frequented by celebrities like Britney Spears, and Jessica Simpson), the prices may run you up to ten grand!

Clip-Ons

If these prices are a shock to you, but you still want to try hair extensions, a cheaper option to consider is clip-ons. These are hair extensions that you can attach yourself with a built-in clip. The prices for a basic clip-on package averages around $80, but some start as low as $20. These are a great option if you just want to try a new look for a short time.

Clip-on hair extensions can be found at most major retailers; however another great place to get them is online at stores line Luxe and World Hair Extensions. Even though they may not give you the same seamless results as hair extensions applied at a salon would, they are a great option if you want to test out some new looks before you commit to one of the other options, or if you only want to change your look up temporarily.
